ZEN × Calligraphy

Imbuing a single character with the breath of life.

Calligraphy is a mirror that reflects a person as they are. The movement of the brush, the shading of the ink,
the soul resides in that single stroke. Empty your mind and simply face the character in front of you.
It is a mindfulness experience to connect deeply with yourself and find inner silence.
Zen calligraphy is self-expression and meditation itself.

ZEN × Calligraphy

Total Concentration in a Single Stroke

- The Calligraphy of the Soul -

The moment you lower the brush onto the white paper. Clear away worldly thoughts and concentrate all your nerves on the single stroke in front of you.
Regulate your breathing and unify the movement of the brush with your mind. The act of turning your consciousness completely to this "here and now" brings deep concentration and calms your mind.

Total Concentration in a Single Stroke

The Temptation of Ink Color

- The Blank Space of the Heart -

The powerful pitch-black ink, the scratchiness born by chance, the grayscale shading woven by the blur.
Accepting and tasting the movement of the ink that cannot be intentionally controlled.
It is the teaching of Zen itself to let go of the mind that seeks perfection and find beauty as it is.

Experiencing the Etiquette of Brushwork with ZEN sumi

How to ZEN sumi

Step 1

Correct Your Posture, Grip and Lower the Brush (Preparation)

First, correct your posture and quietly regulate your breathing. Calm your mind and prepare the brush and ink.
The time spent grinding the ink is also an important ritual to calm your mind. Feel the weight of the brush and think about the character you are about to draw.

Step 2

Drop a Single Stroke in the Silence (Concentration)

Soak up plenty of ink and lower the brush at once while exhaling. Do not be bound by the shape of the character,
but entrust your current emotions to the brush honestly. Rather than trying to write well, let the brush go where it wants.
Your emotions at that moment will appear as lines.

Step 3

Gaze at the Blank Space, Arrange Your Mind (Awareness)

When you finish writing, take a breath and quietly gaze at the character you wrote. Blurring, scratchiness,
strength, and weakness—accept "the current you" including everything. By tasting the contrast of black and white,
and the beauty of the blank space, a new blank space is born in your heart.
